CHALLENGE: Empowering local civil society to adopt effective methodologies for sustainable urban regeneration •
MY CONTRIBUTION: Facilitating the development of a participatory, inclusive, and structured approach to urban regeneration
Largo Perestrello, a 1,400 sqm concrete space atop an underground car park in the working-class, culturally diverse neighborhood of Tor Pignattara/Marranella, had become a hub for cultural activities due to a lack of public spaces. The project aimed to foster strategic collaboration among local organizations to promote greener and more sustainable public spaces.
As a mentor to the NGO Fondazione Bertugno-Moulinier, funded by EIT, I guided the application of New European Bauhaus methods to regenerate the area, fostering community, belonging, and a reconnection with nature.
Together, we identified key challenges, including fragmented partner efforts, a lack of self-governance, and overly ambitious goals. We defined clear objectives, activities, and methodologies, enabling the mentees to design a feasible development process emphasizing participation, inclusivity, and sustainability.
